During the Industrial Revolution, Stalybridge became a leading textile manufacturing town and its cotton industry transformed the town into a self-sufficient town.

Stalybridge's cotton mills

In the Industrial Revolution, Stalybridge's cotton mills were essential to the prosperity of this town. In the 17th and early 18th centuries Stalybridge was the first major textile manufacturing center in Britain. The largest cotton mill in the world was located in the town. At the end of the century there were thousands of people employed in the cotton mills. Stalybridge also established a thriving tradition of music with brass band contests held in the town since 1870.

Oldham mills shut down in 1960s and the John Moores Organisation, owners of Burlington catalogs and Littlewoods Stores, took over. After this, the mills were left empty for a long time. The fires eventually forced some of them to be partially demolished.

Stalybridge was the site of frequent alerts from air-raids and intense blackouts throughout the 20th century.
